2025 ‘Happy Chinese New Year’ Kicks Off with Spectacular Gala in Malaysia

The 2025 “Happy Chinese New Year” global launch ceremony lit up Kuala Lumpur on Saturday evening, bringing together spectacular performances by artists from Malaysia, China, and around the world. The gala showcased the vibrant cultural essence of the Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, creating a festive atmosphere of global celebration.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, China’s Minister of Culture and Tourism Sun Yeli, and Malaysian Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Tiong King Sing attended the event, delivering speeches that highlighted the importance of cultural exchange and unity.

The ceremony began with the symbolic “dotting of the lion’s eyes” ritual, performed jointly by distinguished guests from the Malaysian and Chinese governments. This traditional act officially inaugurated the event, signifying good luck and prosperity for the year ahead.

Throughout the evening, artists from countries including Britain, France, the United States, New Zealand, Egypt, Cambodia, and Kazakhstan joined local performers on stage. Their collaborative performances celebrated the universal themes of joy and togetherness that the Chinese New Year embodies.

For 25 consecutive years, the “Happy Chinese New Year” celebrations, organized by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism, have fostered cultural appreciation worldwide. The 2025 Chinese New Year holds special significance as it will be the first since the festival was inscribed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This year, the celebrations will expand further, featuring nearly 500 diverse performances and exhibitions across more than 100 countries and regions. The global community is invited to join in the festivities, experiencing the rich traditions and vibrant spirit of the Chinese New Year.
