In a breathtaking display of technology and tradition, 16 humanoid robots took center stage alongside 16 human dancers at China’s annual Spring Festival Gala on Tuesday night. The robots, developed by leading robotics company Unitree, performed a captivating Yangko dance—a vibrant folk art from northeast China—seamlessly blending cultural heritage with cutting-edge innovation.
One of the most mesmerizing moments of the night was when the robots showcased their ability to manipulate handkerchiefs, a signature element of the Yangko dance. With precise mechanical arm movements, they twirled and tossed the handkerchiefs high into the air, creating a dazzling spectacle that symbolized the perfect fusion of tradition and modernity.
"They will perform fully automated position changes on stage, and their dance movements are all driven by AI," said Wang Qixin, head of marketing at Unitree, in an interview with CGTN before the show. The performance demonstrated the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics in China, highlighting how technology can enhance and preserve cultural practices.
The Spring Festival Gala is one of the most-watched television events in the world, and this year’s inclusion of humanoid robots dancing alongside humans captivated audiences both at home and abroad. The performance not only entertained but also inspired viewers about the possibilities of technology in the arts.
As the robots moved in harmony with their human counterparts, the audience witnessed a glimpse of the future where humans and machines collaborate creatively. This innovative approach to a traditional dance served as a reminder of the endless potential when culture meets technology.
