China’s Wang Xinyu secured her first win of the season in a thrilling three-set match against Canada’s Rebecca Marino at the Singapore Tennis Open on Tuesday. The fourth seed overcame a tough challenge to triumph 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, advancing to the second round.
Despite Marino’s ranking of 102 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), she proved to be a formidable opponent from the outset. Marino broke Wang’s first service game, surging ahead to a 2-0 lead in the first set. Undeterred, Wang adjusted her strategy, leveling the score at 3-3 after six games. She then claimed three of the next four games, sealing the first set 6-4.
The second set intensified as both players exchanged powerful shots. Marino edged out Wang 7-5, pushing the match into a decisive third set. Learning from the setback, Wang amplified her serve’s power and showcased resilience. With the score tied at 5-5 in the final set, Marino’s failed drop shot gave Wang a crucial break in the 11th game. Seizing the momentum, Wang delivered a flawless service game, including an ace, to clinch the victory.
“I’m happy to win my first match of the season,” Wang said after the match. “Rebecca played really well, and it was a tough battle, but I stayed focused and fought until the end.”
Wang Xinyu will face Australia’s Maya Joint in the next round.
In other matches, China’s Wang Xiyu was defeated by Russia’s Maria Timofeeva 6-3, 7-6(3). Timofeeva, who entered the tournament as a lucky loser, will play Ann Li of the United States in the upcoming round.
