Young ‘Little Potatoes’ Conquer Yabuli Ski Slopes in Harbin

The Yabuli Ski Resort in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, is buzzing with excitement as the 9th Asian Winter Games draw near. Hundreds of young skiers from southern China, affectionately called ‘Little Potatoes,’ have flocked to the snowy slopes.

Decked out in vibrant ski gear, these enthusiastic beginners filled the air with laughter and cheers. Some stumbled and fell, while others confidently glided down the trails, each embodying the spirit of adventure.

‘It’s my first time seeing so much snow,’ exclaimed Li Mei, a 15-year-old from Guangzhou. ‘I’ve always dreamed of skiing, and now I can’t get enough of it!’

The influx of these young skiers highlights the growing passion for winter sports across China. With the country’s increased investment in ice and snow facilities, more youths are embracing activities once uncommon in warmer regions.

Wang Qiang, a ski instructor at Yabuli, noted, ‘It’s incredible to see so many kids from the south eager to learn. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and they’re picking up skills quickly.’

As the Asian Winter Games approach, the excitement is palpable. The ‘Little Potatoes’ are not only enjoying the thrill of the sport but also contributing to a vibrant atmosphere that showcases China’s expanding winter sports culture.
