Warm Welcome in Harbin as Athletes Arrive for 9th Asian Winter Games

Harbin, located in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, is buzzing with excitement as the 9th Asian Winter Games are just days away from their grand opening on February 7, 2009. The city is rolling out the red carpet for athletes and delegations from across Asia, ensuring a smooth and warm welcome upon their arrival.

On Saturday afternoon, over forty members of the South Korean delegation touched down at Harbin Taiping International Airport. Thanks to special channels set up specifically for the Asian Winter Games, they breezed through customs and immigration in record time.

To facilitate such efficient arrivals, the organizing committee has established an Arrivals & Departures Command Center at the airport. Deputy Chief Zhou Shengbin shared, “Athletes from a total of 34 countries and regions will participate in the ninth Asian Winter Games in Harbin. We’ve implemented various measures, including dedicated channels for customs clearance and border inspection, as well as baggage reclaim areas for overseas delegations. We’ve also set up registration and activation points for international arrivals. This way, overseas visitors and delegations will enjoy quick and considerate services when they arrive in Harbin.”

Chinese mixed doubles curling pair Han Yu and Wang Zhiyu also arrived at Taiping Airport on the same day. Having teamed up in November, they’ve been actively participating in competitions to prepare for the newly added event in this edition of the Games.

Adding to the international arrivals, Kuwait’s men’s ice hockey team landed in Harbin, marking their entry into the competition. With 33 athletes competing in seven disciplines, Kuwait has been training diligently since September. The team’s deputy head expressed gratitude, saying they were overwhelmed by the warm hospitality from the Chinese organizers and volunteers, making them feel instantly welcome.

As athletes continue to arrive, Harbin’s dedication to providing top-notch services highlights the spirit of unity and friendship that the Asian Winter Games embodies. The city eagerly anticipates the thrilling competitions ahead, celebrating both athletic excellence and cultural exchange.
