China Gears Up for Future Deep sea Missions

China Upgrades Deep-Sea Submersibles for Future Ocean Expeditions

China is gearing up for new deep-sea adventures as it upgrades its manned submersible Jiaolong and research vessel Dayang Yihao (Ocean No.1) to prepare for upcoming exploration missions, according to the country’s oceanic affairs administration.

Jiaolong, named after a mythical sea dragon, is capable of diving deeper than 7,000 meters. This China-made underwater ship has explored the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Atlantic Ocean.

The submersible is currently undergoing significant enhancements, including upgrades to its critical components like the lithium battery system. Technicians have completed major improvements, and Jiaolong is scheduled for tank tests in February followed by sea trials in the South China Sea in March.

Meanwhile, Ocean No.1 is also receiving major upgrades, including the installation of remotely operated underwater vehicles. These enhancements will boost its capabilities, providing reliable support for future deep-sea resource surveys and development.

Ocean No.1, China’s first modern comprehensive ocean-going scientific research vessel, has over four decades of service and has conducted 27 oceanographic scientific expeditions. With these upgrades, it is set to continue exploring the mysteries of the deep sea and contributing to scientific research.
