Chinas 2025 Box Office Surpasses 10b Yuan Secures Global Top Spot

China’s 2025 Box Office Hits Record 10 Billion Yuan, Leads Global Rankings

China’s film industry has reached a monumental milestone in 2025, with box office revenue surpassing 10 billion yuan (nearly $1.4 billion), including advance ticket sales. This achievement places the Chinese mainland at the top of the global box office rankings, overtaking North America.

As of 3:30 p.m. on Monday, the box office earnings during the Spring Festival period reached a historic 8 billion yuan (over $1.1 billion), according to data from the National Film Administration.

Leading this unprecedented success is the animated blockbuster “Ne Zha 2”, which has shattered over ten national box office records. The film has outperformed last year’s Spring Festival champion, “Yolo,” and is now poised to become the highest-grossing film in China’s cinema history.

Back in 2019, the original “Ne Zha: Birth of the Demon Child” stunned the movie industry with earnings of 5 billion yuan (around $690 million). The sequel, “Ne Zha 2,” returns with a more compelling storyline and breathtaking visuals, sparking widespread discussion among audiences.

Not long ago, Chinese studios were often seen as Hollywood’s “back office,” handling minor visual effects for U.S. films. As the Chinese mainland’s film industry grew, many productions outsourced work to foreign studios. But that’s changing. China’s computer-generated imagery (CGI) industry is stepping forward, helping tell stories deeply rooted in Chinese culture.

The success of “Ne Zha 2” exemplifies the rise of domestic films that resonate with local audiences while showcasing the Chinese mainland’s technical advancements in filmmaking. This trend signifies a new era where the Chinese mainland’s film industry is making a significant impact on the global stage.
