Chinese Naval Fleet’s Passage Through Basilan Strait Complies with International Law

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has affirmed that the recent journey of its naval fleet through the Basilan Strait aligns fully with international law and maritime practices. Tian Junli, spokesperson for the PLA Southern Theater Command, stated that the fleet’s passage was a routine operation conducted in a safe, standardized, and professional manner.

On Monday, the command deployed naval and air forces for training exercises, navigating through international waters via the Basilan Strait. Tian emphasized that these activities are normal and legitimate, reflecting the rights of all nations under international maritime law.

Tian addressed concerns raised by the Philippine side, which he noted have “falsely hyped and smeared” the fleet’s normal passage. He urged respect for the legitimate navigation rights of China and other countries, highlighting the importance of maintaining open and free navigation in international waters.

The Basilan Strait, located in the southern Philippines, is a crucial maritime route connecting the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The PLA’s affirmation underscores China’s commitment to lawful maritime activities and international cooperation.
