Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with the Sultan of Brunei, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, in Beijing on Thursday, strengthening ties between the two nations and expanding cooperation across various fields.
In recent years, under the strategic leadership of their heads of state, China and Brunei have steadily advanced their relationship. Premier Li highlighted that cooperation has expanded significantly, yielding fruitful results. “China has always regarded Brunei as an important partner in deepening friendly relations with its neighbors,” Li said.
China expressed its willingness to work with Brunei to implement the consensus reached by the two leaders, maintain high-level exchanges, and deepen practical cooperation. The aim is to jointly promote development and prosperity, bringing greater benefits to the people of both countries.
The two sides agreed to upgrade economic and trade cooperation, seizing the renewal of the Belt and Road cooperation plan as an opportunity to accelerate key projects. China is prepared to strengthen cooperation with Brunei in fields such as the information industry, technological innovation, green development, and agriculture, fostering new economic drivers.
China is ready to import more high-quality agricultural and aquatic products from Brunei and encourages qualified Chinese enterprises to invest there. Li added that China hopes Brunei will provide more support and facilitation for Chinese companies.
On regional matters, Li emphasized China’s firm support for ASEAN’s unity and strategic autonomy. He expressed willingness to work with all ASEAN member states, including Brunei, to promote the establishment of a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah stressed that Brunei highly values its relationship with China and firmly adheres to the one-China policy. He regards China as a key partner and is willing to expand cooperation in areas such as trade, petrochemicals, the digital economy, agriculture, and addressing climate change.
Brunei is ready to deepen cooperation within the framework of ASEAN-China relations, strengthen regional connectivity and people-to-people exchanges, and promote the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between ASEAN and China, fostering regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
Furthermore, Sultan Hassanal appreciated China’s important role in international and regional affairs and supports China’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
