Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, hosted a glittering banquet in the northeastern city of Harbin on Friday, welcoming international dignitaries ahead of the opening ceremony of the 9th Asian Winter Games.

Amidst the shimmering ice sculptures and snow-covered landscapes that Harbin is famous for, President Xi extended a warm welcome to his guests, including International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach. He spoke of China’s growing passion for winter sports, ignited by hosting major events, and how it brings new energy to global winter athletics.

“The current Asian Winter Games set a record with participating countries, regions, and athletes,” Xi noted with pride. “Harbin will deliver a sports gala that is distinctly Chinese, uniquely Asian, and truly spectacular.”

The theme of this year’s games, “Dream of Winter, Love among Asia,” symbolizes the shared aspirations of Asian people for peace, development, and friendship. President Xi emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in meeting global challenges.

“Peace is as pure as ice and snow,” he remarked. “We should join hands to face security challenges and contribute Asian strength to building a harmonious world.”

He encouraged efforts to promote progress and development, highlighting that winter sports require passion and teamwork. “Let’s work together to drive universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization,” Xi urged.

President Xi also celebrated the diversity of Asian civilizations. “Every snowflake is unique, just like every culture,” he said. “We should embrace inclusiveness and mutual learning to advance human civilization.”

Harbin, known as the “Ice City,” is the birthplace of China’s modern winter sports. Xi expressed how ice and snow have become valuable assets for the city’s high-quality development and a new link connecting it to the world.

“We invite you to explore this hospitable and open land,” he told his guests. “Discover the charm of Harbin and witness the path of Chinese modernization.”

Noting that China has just entered the Year of the Snake, President Xi explained that the snake represents wisdom and agility in Chinese culture. “I wish all athletes excellent performances with the agility of the snake,” he said, hoping everyone would create unforgettable memories in Harbin’s winter wonderland.
