Hong Kong is taking a stand against new U.S. tariffs. On Friday, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government announced plans to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the United States’ decision to impose an additional 10-percent tariff on products from the region.
A spokesperson for the HKSAR government stated that the U.S. measures seriously violate WTO rules and disregard Hong Kong’s status as a separate customs territory—an arrangement outlined in Article 116 of the Basic Law and recognized by the WTO.
“We will initiate procedures under the WTO’s dispute settlement mechanism to challenge these unreasonable measures and defend our legitimate rights,” the spokesperson declared.
The spokesperson emphasized that Hong Kong is a staunch supporter of the rules-based multilateral trading system. “We strongly oppose the U.S. measures and urge the United States to immediately rectify its wrongdoings,” they added.
