Over 30 people are missing after a devastating landslide struck Jinping Village in Junlian County, Sichuan Province, on Saturday. The landslide occurred at 11:50 a.m., burying 10 houses and prompting the evacuation of approximately 200 residents to safety.
Local authorities swiftly initiated a Level I geological disaster emergency response—the highest level—at 3:30 p.m. Emergency teams, including rescue workers, firefighters, and medical personnel, rushed to the scene to search for survivors and assist in rescue efforts. Two people were rescued in the afternoon.
In response to the disaster, the National Development and Reform Commission allocated 50 million yuan (approximately $6.97 million) for disaster relief and recovery. The funds will support the restoration of infrastructure and public facilities in the affected areas. Additionally, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management have earmarked 30 million yuan to bolster rescue and relief operations in Sichuan.
Rescue teams are working tirelessly amid challenging conditions to locate the missing and provide assistance to those affected. The community has come together, offering support and resources to aid in the relief efforts.
The cause of the landslide is under investigation, although heavy rainfall and geological factors are often contributors to such natural disasters in the region.
As rescue operations continue, authorities are urging residents in nearby areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent further tragedies.
