When Lukas, a German student, arrived in China, he knew he was in for an adventure. What he didn’t anticipate was just how transformative his journey would be. From the bustling streets filled with aromatic street food to the serene temples echoing with ancient chants, Lukas found himself immersed in a world both foreign and fascinating.
Navigating daily life became an exciting challenge. Ordering breakfast was more than just a meal—it was a lesson in language and culture. “I remember pointing at dishes, hoping for the best. Sometimes I ended up with the most delicious surprises,” Lukas recalls with a laugh.
Embracing Chinese traditions led to unforgettable experiences. During the Spring Festival, Lukas donned traditional Hanfu attire, fulfilling a lifelong dream of practicing kung fu in authentic garments. “I felt connected to the history and spirit of the culture,” he says.
Alongside his international roommates, Lukas explored the vibrant facets of Chinese society. They celebrated local festivals, tried their hand at calligraphy, and even participated in lantern-making workshops as the Lantern Festival approached.
“Every day was a new story,” Lukas reflects. “The cultural misunderstandings weren’t setbacks—they were opportunities to learn and grow.”
