Handmade Lanterns in Great Demand in Nanjing As Festival Draws Near

Nanjing’s Handmade Lanterns Shine Bright as Lantern Festival Nears

As the Lantern Festival approaches on February 12, Nanjing’s Confucius Temple scenic area is buzzing with excitement. Crowds are flocking to the traditional markets, eager to admire and purchase colorful handmade lanterns crafted by skilled artisans.

On February 9, artisans were seen adding the finishing touches to intricate lanterns, each a unique work of art. The vibrant lanterns not only light up the streets but also symbolize joy and good fortune for the upcoming festival.

“I’ve been making lanterns for over 20 years, and it’s heartwarming to see the younger generation appreciate this traditional craft,” said Li Wei, a local artisan. “The Lantern Festival is a time for family and celebration, and these lanterns bring people together.”

The Lantern Festival marks the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations and is one of China’s most cherished traditions. In Nanjing, festivities are especially lively, featuring lantern displays, folk performances, and delicious yuanxiao (sweet rice dumplings) enjoyed by all.

Visitors and residents alike are invited to join the celebrations and experience the magical atmosphere as the city lights up with a sea of lanterns.
