South Korean short track speed skater Jang Sung-woo clinched gold in the men’s 1,000-meter event at the 9th Asian Winter Games held in Harbin, northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, on Sunday. The victory marks a significant achievement for Jang and adds to South Korea’s proud history in the sport.
In an interview after his win, Jang expressed his delight in competing in Harbin, affectionately known as the “Ice City.” Despite the biting cold, he praised the city’s vibrant atmosphere and the warm welcome from local fans. “The cold weather was a challenge, but the support from everyone here made it an unforgettable experience,” he said.
Looking ahead, Jang is gearing up for the International Skating Union (ISU) World Short Track Speed Skating Championships set to take place in Beijing in mid-March. “I’m excited to compete against the world’s best in Beijing,” he shared. “It’s a crucial step toward my goal of representing my country at the Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in 2026.”
