Nearly 20 athletes, sports delegation officials, and media representatives from countries participating in the 9th Asian Winter Games immersed themselves in China’s rich cultural heritage during a vibrant exchange event in Harbin City, northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, on Monday.
The international guests from countries including Mongolia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam gathered at a China Media Group studio nestled within the picturesque Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo Park.
The event kicked off with an energetic performance by a local Yangge dancing troupe. The dancers’ lively moves and rhythmic drum beats quickly lifted everyone’s spirits. Captivated by the contagious enthusiasm, many foreign guests joined in the dance, experiencing this traditional folk art firsthand.
The cultural immersion continued with hands-on activities featuring Chinese intangible cultural heritage crafts. Participants tried their hands at ice engraving, crafting intricate designs from ice blocks. They also explored the art of sugar painting, wheat straw art, and paper cutting, creating their own unique souvenirs under the guidance of local artisans.
No cultural experience is complete without savoring traditional delicacies. The guests sampled winter treats like frozen pears and persimmons. They also enjoyed making Yuanxiao—glutinous rice flour dumplings with sweet fillings—a staple of the Lantern Festival, adding a flavorful touch to their cultural journey.
The 9th Asian Winter Games runs from February 7 to 14, bringing together athletes from across Asia not only to compete in sports but also to celebrate and share in diverse cultural exchanges like this one.
