The vibrant Maolong Festival of the Gelao ethnic group recently brought the streets of Shiqian County in southwest China’s Guizhou Province to life. As part of the celebrations leading up to the Lantern Festival on February 12, thousands gathered to witness the dazzling display of dragon dances and traditional festivities.
Dating back over a thousand years to the Tang Dynasty, the Maolong Festival is a cherished tradition among the Gelao communities in Shiqian. This annual event, recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage since 2006, symbolizes the Gelao people’s hopes for a bountiful harvest and prosperity in the coming year.
This year, sixty-eight local teams participated in the festival, showcasing elaborate dragon dance performances that captivated more than 10,000 spectators. The lively atmosphere was a testament to the resilience and cultural richness of the Gelao ethnic group.
