A spokesperson from the Chinese mainland has cautioned that the Taiwan region’s reliance on the United States could harm its industrial development. Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, expressed concerns on Wednesday over proposed measures by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities.
During a regular press conference, Zhu commented on the DPP’s four “response measures” designed to “strengthen industrial cooperation between the Taiwan region and the U.S.” These measures were introduced after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on imports of computer chips and semiconductors, aiming to bring these industries back to the United States.
Zhu criticized the DPP’s actions, stating they are “selling out the Taiwan region to please the U.S.” She emphasized that such reliance undermines the foundation of industrial development in the Taiwan region and sacrifices the well-being of its residents.
“The facts have repeatedly shown that the more the DPP authorities rely on the U.S., the more harm they bring to the Taiwan region,” Zhu said.
She also addressed the U.S.’s trade policies, noting that unilateralism and trade protectionism “once again prove that the U.S. always prioritizes its own interests above all else.”
