China and Cook Islands Strengthen Ties for Mutual Growth

Beijing — China and the Cook Islands have pledged to deepen political mutual trust and expand practical cooperation across various sectors, marking a significant step in their nearly 30-year relationship.

During a meeting on Friday afternoon, Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown in Harbin City, northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province. Brown was in Harbin to attend the closing ceremony of the 9th Asian Winter Games.

Premier Li emphasized the strong foundation of sincerity, friendship, and equality that has characterized the bilateral ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations 28 years ago. He stated, “China firmly supports the people of the Cook Islands in choosing a development path suited to their own national conditions.”

The two leaders discussed enhancing cooperation in areas such as marine sectors, infrastructure, agriculture, fishery, education, culture, health, and youth exchanges. Li expressed China’s willingness to import more quality products from the Cook Islands and encourage Chinese tourism to the Pacific nation.

On global issues, Li highlighted the importance of working together to address climate change, calling for a fair and win-win global climate governance system.

Prime Minister Brown praised the enduring friendship between the two countries. “The Cook Islands always regards China as an important partner and good friend,” he said. Brown reiterated his country’s commitment to the one-China principle and expressed eagerness to deepen cooperation in various fields, including agriculture, infrastructure, and tourism.

Both leaders underscored the significance of their comprehensive strategic partnership, aiming for sustained and in-depth development that benefits both nations.
