The Harbin Asian Winter Games have been hailed as a new benchmark for multi-sport events in Asia by Husain Al Musallam, Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
As the Games wrapped up on Friday night, Al Musallam praised the event’s success. “Our athletes loved competing here and can’t wait to return to Harbin. The world saw how Harbin pulled off such a massive event in just 18 months, not only with top-notch facilities but with amazing attention to detail,” he said.
He was particularly impressed by the cutting-edge medical services. “I’ve been to all the Asian Games since 1982, and many world championships in Asia. I’ve never seen such advanced technology in medical services,” Al Musallam noted.
Timothy Fok Tsun-ting, First Vice President of the OCA, highlighted the record-breaking participation. “With over 1,200 athletes from 34 countries and regions, this is the biggest turnout in the history of the event,” he said. The Games also saw Saudi Arabia and Cambodia making their debut appearances.
Harbin wasn’t just buzzing with athletes. During China’s eight-day Spring Festival holiday, the city welcomed over 12 million visits—a 20.4% increase from last year!
Zhang Haihua, Deputy Secretary-General of the organizing committee and Vice Mayor of Harbin, shared, “We offered free mobile charging stations, ginger tea, and hot water services throughout the venues. It was all about showcasing Harbin’s hospitality.“
Looking ahead, Zhang discussed plans to keep the momentum going. “We’re encouraging venues to adopt flexible management models and enhance digital services. We’ll also host sports events in tourist spots and commercial areas to expand winter sports coverage,” she added.
