China Ready to Strengthen Ties with EU, Says Foreign Minister Wang Yi

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has expressed Beijing’s readiness to strengthen strategic communication with the European Union (EU) to enhance mutual understanding and contribute to global stability.

Speaking on Saturday during a meeting with the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany, Wang Yi emphasized that there is no fundamental conflict of interest or geopolitical rivalry between China and the EU.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, highlighted the shared commitment of both China and the EU to multilateralism. “Both sides advocate safeguarding the core role of the United Nations, believe that international issues should be resolved through dialogue and consultation, and oppose unilateral bullying,” he stated.

“This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU,” Wang noted. “We should seize this opportunity to reflect on our experiences, reaffirm our partnership, and uphold the theme of dialogue and cooperation.”

He proposed organizing a series of commemorative events and preparing for a new round of China-EU leaders’ meetings to “outline a new blueprint and inject fresh impetus into the next 50 years of China-EU relations.”

Josep Borrell expressed the EU’s appreciation for China’s leading role in addressing climate change and other global challenges. He affirmed the EU’s willingness to work with China to uphold multilateralism and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.
