Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Friday at the Munich Security Conference, urging the alliance to pursue a positive and objective policy toward China.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized China’s role as a force for peace and stability. “China is the largest contributor of peacekeepers among the permanent members of the UN Security Council and the second-largest financial contributor to UN peacekeeping operations,” he noted.
Highlighting the escalating geopolitical tensions, Wang expressed hope that NATO would maintain its role as a regional defense organization and contribute constructively to global and regional peace. “We hope NATO will encourage its members to adopt a rational and pragmatic attitude toward China,” he said.
Stoltenberg reassured that NATO has no intention of expanding into Asia. “As a regional defense organization, we stand ready to strengthen dialogue and communication with China to enhance mutual understanding and trust,” he stated.
The two leaders also exchanged views on the ongoing Ukraine crisis. Wang Yi reiterated China’s commitment to promoting a political settlement. “China is willing to work with all parties to play a constructive role in achieving peace in Europe and establishing a balanced, effective, and sustainable security framework,” he said.
Stoltenberg acknowledged China’s influence and expressed hope that China would play an important role in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict as soon as possible.
