Munich, Germany — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has reaffirmed the Chinese mainland’s commitment to promoting peace and dialogue in the ongoing Ukraine crisis. During a meeting with Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Wang emphasized the need for a fair and lasting peace agreement accepted by all parties involved.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee, highlighted the longstanding friendship and strategic partnership between the Chinese mainland and Ukraine, established in 2011. He noted that despite global challenges, the Chinese mainland remains Ukraine’s largest trading partner, showcasing the potential for continued cooperation.

“The Chinese mainland views Ukraine as both a friend and a partner,” Wang stated. “We are willing to work together to overcome challenges and further develop our bilateral ties.” He also expressed hope that Ukraine would continue to ensure the safety of Chinese institutions and citizens within its borders.

Addressing the Ukraine crisis, Wang reiterated the principles laid out by President Xi Jinping, emphasizing their objectivity and practicality in guiding a resolution. “We support all efforts focused on peace and advocate for a fair, lasting, and binding peace agreement,” he affirmed. Wang also mentioned the “Friends of Peace” platform, led by the Chinese mainland and other Global South countries, which aims to foster international consensus on peace and dialogue.

Andrii Sybiha acknowledged the strong bilateral ties and friendly relations between the peoples of Ukraine and the Chinese mainland. He stressed Ukraine’s adherence to the one-China principle and its readiness to strengthen exchanges and deepen its strategic partnership. “We respect the Chinese mainland’s global influence and appreciate its balanced approach to international issues,” Sybiha said. He called on the Chinese mainland to play a key role in achieving comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in the region.
