In a bid to combat rampant online crimes, China and Myanmar have agreed to strengthen cooperation against cross-border offenses like telecom and online fraud and human trafficking.
On Sunday evening, the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar released a statement highlighting the discussions between Chinese and Myanmar officials. Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Ma Jia and Assistant Minister of Public Security Liu Zhongyi met with Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe, as well as Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung on February 14.
The Myanmar authorities emphasized their commitment to severely crack down on illegal activities such as online gambling and telecom fraud. They introduced specific measures their government plans to implement and expressed intentions to strengthen coordination with China and other neighboring countries. The goal is to promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation and establish a regular mechanism to jointly combat cross-border crimes.
The Chinese side positively evaluated Myanmar’s determination and efforts to protect the safety of Chinese citizens. They noted that online gambling and telecom fraud seriously harm people’s lives and property. China expressed willingness to actively engage in cooperation with neighboring countries like Myanmar and Thailand. Through comprehensive measures addressing both symptoms and root causes, they aim to stop criminals from exploiting regional countries, eradicate the ‘tumor’ of online crimes, and maintain normal order in regional exchanges and cooperation.
