China has called on the United States to correct recent changes made to the Taiwan fact sheet on the U.S. State Department’s website, stating that the updates send a wrong signal to those seeking “Taiwan independence.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed the matter on Monday, emphasizing that there is only one China and that Taiwan is part of China. Guo stated that the U.S. revisions to the Taiwan fact sheet undermine previous commitments and violate the one-China principle.
“We urge the U.S. to immediately correct its mistakes, abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués,” said Guo. He called on the U.S. to halt any actions that could encourage “Taiwan independence” and to avoid further damage to China-U.S. relations.
The U.S. State Department recently updated its Taiwan fact sheet, reportedly removing language that stated it does not support Taiwan’s independence. China views this change as a significant backpedaling on the U.S. position regarding Taiwan.
Guo stressed that adherence to the one-China principle is a basic norm in international relations and a solemn commitment made by the United States. He urged the U.S. to stop upgrading its substantive relations with Taiwan and to refrain from assisting Taiwan in expanding its international presence.
The situation adds tension to the already complex relationship between China and the U.S., particularly concerning Taiwan. China maintains that issues related to Taiwan are internal affairs and warns against external interference.
