China Launches ‘Travel with Chinese Films’ Initiative to Boost Tourism

China has unveiled the “China Travel with Chinese Films” initiative in Beijing, aiming to merge the magic of cinema with the allure of tourism. The launch event took place on Monday at the China National Film Museum, spotlighting the international success of Chinese films like Ne Zha II, Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force, and Detective Chinatown 1900.

The initiative seeks to leverage the global popularity of these blockbusters along with new visa-free transit policies to attract more overseas visitors to the Chinese mainland. By integrating film screenings, international film festivals, and overseas Chinese film festivals, the program encourages foreign audiences to experience China through cinematic storytelling.

Hosted by the China Film Administration and China Media Group (CMG), and organized by China Global Television Network (CGTN) and the Film Channel Program Center, the event focuses on promoting “film + tourism.” The goal is to develop themed travel routes that offer immersive experiences in both movie culture and China’s rich natural and cultural landscapes, effectively connecting media exposure with consumer engagement.

Jiang Qiudi, head of CMG’s Europe Bureau, highlighted CMG’s plans to utilize its global network of correspondents and partnerships with international media and social platforms to expand the initiative’s reach. “We aim to strengthen collaborations with international film institutions and establish flagship events showcasing excellent Chinese films to further solidify the global presence of Chinese cinema,” Jiang said.

Filmmakers and production teams behind this year’s New Year blockbusters shared updates on box office performances worldwide, expressing enthusiasm for the initiative’s potential to boost both the film and tourism industries.

The event drew representatives from CMG, the Film Bureau of the Publicity Department of CPC Central Committee, major Chinese film production and distribution companies, film studios, travel agencies, and the Silk Road International Film Festival, all uniting to support this innovative fusion of cinema and travel.
