China Welcomes US-Russia Peace Talks to Resolve Ukraine Crisis

China has voiced strong support for peace efforts in Ukraine, including the recent agreement between the United States and Russia to initiate peace talks. Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized China’s commitment to finding a peaceful resolution during a UN Security Council briefing on Monday.

“We welcome all efforts dedicated to peace in Ukraine,” Fu said, reaffirming China’s stance on resolving global conflicts through dialogue and consultation in line with the UN Charter.

Reflecting on the Minsk Agreements from a decade ago, Fu expressed regret over their incomplete implementation. “The failure of the Minsk Agreements is deplorable and warrants deep reflection,” he noted, highlighting how the missed opportunity contributed to the escalation of the crisis.

Fu outlined China’s four-point proposal for addressing the Ukraine issue:

  • Respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries.
  • Observing the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
  • Considering the legitimate security concerns of all nations.
  • Supporting all efforts conducive to a peaceful settlement.

He stressed that this proposal serves as China’s fundamental guidance on the matter. “The evolving situation has proven that China’s approach is objective, fair, rational, and pragmatic, reflecting the broad consensus of the international community,” Fu stated.

China has been actively engaged in diplomatic mediation, maintaining contact with all relevant parties, including Russia and Ukraine. Fu highlighted China’s constructive role in promoting a ceasefire and encouraging political settlement within the UN framework.

In collaboration with Brazil and other nations, China has also helped establish the Group of Friends for Peace. This initiative aims to harness the collective wisdom of countries in the Global South to form a significant force for peace.

As the conflict reaches a critical juncture, Fu expressed hope that all parties will engage in peace talks and work towards a fair, lasting, and binding agreement acceptable to everyone involved. “The ultimate resolution of any conflict lies at the negotiation table, and history will undoubtedly deliver a just outcome,” he asserted.

Fu emphasized the importance of Europe’s role in fostering peace, given that the conflict is unfolding on European soil. “We hope the parties will jointly address the root causes of the crisis through negotiation and find a balanced, effective, and sustainable security framework for lasting stability in the region,” he concluded.
