A young Frenchman named Marcus Detrez has arrived in China carrying a remarkable collection of 622 rare photographs allegedly taken by his grandfather, Roger-Pierre Laurens, during World War II. These photographs may offer unprecedented glimpses into historical events, including the Japanese invasion of China.
Detrez believes that some of the images document critical moments from the 1937 invasion of Shanghai, capturing scenes of devastation such as the destruction of temples, monuments, and other cultural landmarks. There are also harrowing depictions of civilians affected by the conflict.
Expressing a deep sense of responsibility, Detrez intends to donate the entire collection to Chinese institutions without compensation. “It’s important that these pieces of history are preserved where they belong,” he said.
The authenticity and historical value of the photographs are yet to be professionally appraised. Historians and experts are eager to examine the collection, as it could shed new light on events from a tumultuous period in China’s history.
This gesture by Detrez highlights the enduring connections between people across the world and the importance of preserving historical memories for future generations.
