China has reaffirmed its strong support for the United Nations’ central role in global affairs, pledging continued close cooperation with the world body. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks on Tuesday during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with Guterres after chairing a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council. He emphasized that in a time of complex changes and escalating geopolitical competition, it is more important than ever to uphold the authority and role of the United Nations.

“The more turbulent and unstable the world becomes, the more we need to support the UN,” Wang said. “China firmly supports the central role of the United Nations and is ready to continue close cooperation to practice true multilateralism and advance the cause of world peace and development.”

Guterres expressed appreciation for China’s commitment, noting that the United Nations highly values China’s role. He said the UN fully agrees with and actively supports the three global initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping. Facing current complex challenges, Guterres called on all countries to strengthen cooperation and promote peace and sustainable development.
