China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao has expressed serious concerns over the United States’ decision to impose tariffs on Chinese imports. In a recent communication with U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Wang emphasized the importance of open dialogue to resolve trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
Wang highlighted that economic and trade relations are a foundational aspect of China-U.S. relations. “Strengthening cooperation is crucial for our mutual development and for global economic growth,” he stated.
He pointed out that both nations’ commerce ministries have historically played significant roles in fostering economic collaboration. China is willing to work with the U.S. to enhance dialogue, manage differences, and promote cooperation based on mutual respect and mutual benefit.
Addressing the issue of U.S. tariffs imposed on Chinese goods, Wang voiced China’s strong dissatisfaction. He noted that the tariffs, justified by concerns over issues like fentanyl, have adversely affected normal economic and trade cooperation. “China and the U.S. have engaged in extensive cooperation on fentanyl control, achieving notable results,” Wang said.
Wang called for the resolution of mutual concerns through equal-footed dialogue and consultation. “We hope that both countries can create a fair and predictable policy environment for our business communities,” he added.
