Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the indispensable role of the United Nations and called for strengthening its position in global affairs during a high-level UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday. Speaking at the meeting titled “Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance,” Wang underscored the need for greater representation of the Global South, which could pave the way for emerging countries to have a stronger voice on the world stage.
“The trend toward multilateralism is irreversible, and all countries should support the multilateral system with the UN at its core,” Wang Yi stated. “The UN’s role should be strengthened, not weakened, and its position must be maintained and cannot be replaced.”
He highlighted the interconnectedness of nations and the shared future they possess. “Strong countries should not bully the weak, and we must avoid a return to a ‘law of the jungle’ approach,” he emphasized, resonating with many young people who advocate for fairness and equality in international relations.
Wang Yi stressed the urgency of reforming global governance to enhance the representation of the Global South, ensuring that the interests of developing nations are reflected. “We need to ensure that the will and interests of the majority of countries are considered in the reform process,” he said, hinting at a more inclusive future where voices from all regions are heard.
Offering suggestions on how the UN Security Council can better fulfill its duties, Wang Yi proposed four key points:
- Prioritize the common good: Countries should look beyond their own interests and focus on shared global interests.
- Engage in sincere cooperation: Restoring unity among the five permanent members of the Security Council is crucial and should begin with open dialogue.
- Honor commitments: Security Council resolutions are legally binding and must be fully implemented without selective enforcement or double standards.
- Reform for better representation: Broad consultations are needed to make the Security Council more representative and responsive, reflecting the realities of today’s world.
“In the face of major crises and conflicts, the UN Security Council should seize the opportunity to keep pace with the times and better respond to the expectations of people around the world,” Wang Yi concluded, inspiring hope for a more just and equitable global future.
