New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, is set to visit China from February 25 to 27, according to an announcement by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
At the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Peters will embark on his first visit to China since taking office in 2023.
“This visit marks the first important high-level interaction between China and New Zealand this year,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a regular press briefing. “It is significant for advancing the implementation of the common understandings between the leaders of the two countries and consolidating the sound momentum of growth in bilateral relations.”
During his stay, Peters is expected to engage in in-depth discussions with Wang Yi on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of mutual interest.
China aims to enhance strategic communication, deepen mutual understanding, and strengthen exchanges and cooperation with New Zealand. “We hope to jointly address challenges and strive to build a China-New Zealand relationship that features mutual respect and accommodation, focuses on cooperation, and pursues common development,” Guo added.
