China and South Africa Pledge Stronger Ties to Amplify Global South’s Voice

Johannesburg, South Africa — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola on Friday during the Group of 20 (G20) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg. The two leaders vowed to strengthen bilateral ties and boost the voice of the Global South on the international stage.

Wang Yi congratulated South Africa on successfully hosting the G20 meeting and assuming the presidency. He highlighted South Africa’s role in representing Africa’s interests globally, noting the significant shifts in international political and economic landscapes. “The theme ‘Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability’ reflects the common aspirations of most countries, especially those from the Global South,” Wang said.

Emphasizing the importance of unity amid growing unilateralism and protectionism, Wang expressed China’s firm support for South Africa’s G20 presidency. He stated, “China is willing to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with South Africa, accelerate development and revitalization, and work together to enhance the representation of Global South countries, especially African nations, in international agendas.”

Ronald Lamola thanked China for its support, saying, “In the face of a volatile international situation, South Africa remains committed to strengthening close coordination and cooperation with China to safeguard the common interests of Global South countries.”

Lamola expressed enthusiasm about the fruitful outcomes of cooperation between the two nations. He looked forward to deepening collaboration in areas such as economy and trade, infrastructure, energy, and emerging industries. “We welcome China to increase investment in South Africa to help us accelerate industrialization and achieve diversified development,” Lamola added.
