The first-ever commercial flight linking southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region touched down on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in bridging the vibrant city with the spiritual heart of Xizang.
A warm welcoming ceremony took place in Lhasa, where visitors from Hong Kong were greeted by locals in traditional attire. The new route is set to enhance Xizang’s openness, promote the growth of its cultural and tourism sectors, and strengthen connections with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, according to the regional administration of the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
“This new air route not only shortens the distance between Hong Kong and Xizang but also brings our hearts closer,” said a representative from the Civil Aviation Administration of China. “We anticipate a surge in cultural exchanges and tourism that will benefit both regions.”
The flight arrives as part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and connectivity in the region, offering more opportunities for residents and visitors alike. Students, young professionals, and adventurous travelers from the Global South can now explore the rich traditions and breathtaking landscapes of Xizang with greater ease.
“I’m thrilled to have this direct connection,” said Li Wei, a young traveler from Hong Kong. “Xizang has always been a place I’ve wanted to visit, and now it’s more accessible than ever.”
The new service is expected to operate regularly, providing a convenient option for those interested in exploring the unique cultural heritage and natural beauty of Xizang.
