Shanghai Shenhua started the 2025 Chinese Super League (CSL) season in dramatic fashion, securing a thrilling 2-1 victory over Changchun Yatai at home in Shanghai on Saturday. The match kept fans on the edge of their seats until the very last minute.
Building on their momentum from earlier this month, where they defeated reigning champions Shanghai Port 3-2 in the Chinese Football Association (CFA) Super Cup, Shenhua showcased their resilience and skill once again. Brazilian striker Saulo Mineiro, who had a standout performance in the Super Cup with two goals, continued his excellent form.
In the 29th minute, Mineiro found the back of the net to put Shenhua ahead. A cross from Yang Haoyu set up the opportunity. Though Mineiro’s initial shot was blocked and Wu Xi’s follow-up was saved by goalkeeper Wu Yake, the ball rebounded to Mineiro, who made no mistake slotting it in from close range.
Changchun Yatai responded before halftime. In the 42nd minute, a miscommunication between Jiang Shenglong and Ibrahim Amadou allowed Yatai to capitalize. Although goalkeeper Bao Yaxiong managed to deflect the initial cross, Tan Long was quick to react, scoring to level the match at 1-1.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time. In the seventh minute of added time, Mineiro showcased his creativity by chipping the ball over goalkeeper Wu Yake. Andre Luis was perfectly positioned to tap it in, sealing the victory for Shenhua and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Elsewhere in the CSL, Chengdu Rongcheng secured a 1-0 home win against Wuhan Three Towns, while Beijing Guoan triumphed 2-0 over Yunnan Yukun on the road.
