An exquisite pottery chiwei, an ancient Chinese roof ornament, is captivating visitors at the Minhang Museum in Shanghai. Displayed since February 23, 2025, this artifact showcases the intricate craftsmanship of ancient Chinese architecture.
The chiwei, shaped like a fishtail, traditionally adorns the ends of ridge poles on the roofs of ancient Chinese palaces. Believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the structure from harm, this particular piece has drawn significant attention due to its cultural significance and stunning detail.
“It’s inspiring to see such a well-preserved piece of our heritage,” said Li Wei, a university student visiting the museum. “Artifacts like this connect us to our past and inspire modern storytelling.”
The influence of the chiwei can be seen in various forms of contemporary media, including popular animated films that reimagine classic Chinese myths. The depiction of majestic palaces with ornate rooftops in these films showcases the charm of ancient Chinese design, drawing inspiration from artifacts like the chiwei.
“Our goal is to incorporate authentic elements of Chinese culture into modern narratives,” said Zhang Ming, an art director in the animation industry. “The chiwei symbolizes a bridge between tradition and innovation.”
The Minhang Museum has reported a surge in visitors eager to see the artifact that embodies the essence of ancient architectural beauty. The exhibition not only highlights historical artistry but also sparks interest among younger generations.
“I’m thrilled that traditional culture is being appreciated through new mediums,” said Chen Yu, a high school student. “Seeing the actual artifact motivates me to learn more about our history.”
