Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for the establishment of a fair and equitable global governance system, emphasizing the importance of stronger multilateralism in addressing global challenges. Speaking on Saturday after his visits to Britain and Ireland, and attending key international meetings, Wang highlighted China’s commitment to promoting a community with a shared future for mankind.
“Global governance has reached a historical crossroads,” Wang stated, pointing to the transformations and turbulence in the international landscape. He noted the growing deficits in peace, development, and governance, stressing that the international community has high expectations for strengthening the role of the United Nations in tackling these issues.
As the rotating president of the UN Security Council for February, China chaired a high-level meeting on “Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance.” Wang reported that all parties agreed on the indispensable role of the UN, the irreversible trend toward multilateralism, and the urgent need to reform and enhance global governance.
At the 61st Munich Security Conference in Germany, which focused on multipolarity, Wang expressed optimism despite the complex challenges facing the world. “Peace, development, and win-win cooperation remain unstoppable trends of the times,” he said. He added that a multipolar world is becoming a reality, and China aims to be a factor of certainty and a steadfast constructive force in this changing landscape.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) Summit, which will be held on the African continent for the first time in November, Wang highlighted the significance of this “African moment” for global governance. During the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in South Africa, China proposed listening to Africa’s voice, supporting its actions, and empowering the continent’s development through G20 cooperation.
“China will play an active and constructive role in G20 cooperation,” Wang affirmed. He pledged firm support for South Africa’s presidency and encouraged all parties to focus on the theme of “Unity, Equality and Sustainability” to meet the common expectations of the Global South.
Wang concluded by emphasizing China’s commitment to working with all parties to draw wisdom from history, usher in a new era of multilateralism, and promote a fair and equitable global governance system.
