Young Kunqu Opera Stars Revive ‘The Legend of the White Snake’ Worldwide

Known as the “ancestor of all Chinese operas,” Kunqu Opera is celebrated for its melodic singing and delicate performances. Now, a group of young performers from the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre is breathing new life into the classic tale, “The Legend of the White Snake,” captivating audiences around the globe.

“The Legend of the White Snake” tells the enchanting love story between Bai Suzhen, a white snake spirit, and Xu Xian, a mortal man. This timeless narrative has been reimagined by the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre, blending traditional elements with fresh innovations to appeal to contemporary viewers.

The troupe has showcased their production in countries like Greece, Italy, and the UK, where they received acclaim for their artistry. Their performance won Best Production at the 2024 Asian Arts Awards during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the UK, marking a significant milestone in bringing Kunqu Opera to international stages.

CGTN spoke with four young performers who play the main characters in the opera. They shared insights into how Kunqu Opera distinguishes itself from other Chinese opera forms. “Kunqu Opera emphasizes elegance and subtlety,” one performer explained. “Our movements are refined, and the singing is intricate, which requires a deep understanding of the art form.”

The performers also discussed how they balance preserving tradition with introducing new ideas. “We respect the heritage of Kunqu Opera,” another performer said. “But we also believe it’s important to innovate, so we incorporate contemporary elements that resonate with younger audiences.”

Foreign audiences have responded enthusiastically to their performances. “It’s amazing to see people from different cultures connect with our stories,” a performer remarked. “Art transcends language barriers, and we feel honored to represent Kunqu Opera on the world stage.”

Their journey highlights the potential of traditional arts to engage new generations and bridge cultural divides. By staying true to their roots while embracing innovation, these young artists are ensuring that Kunqu Opera continues to thrive in the modern era.
