China Calls for Fair Global Human Rights Governance

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for a fair and just global human rights governance system, emphasizing the need for a people-centered approach. Speaking via video at the high-level meeting of the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on Monday, Wang urged countries to work together to reform and improve the current system.

“Human rights governance should always keep its original mission in mind—it must be centered on people,” Wang said. He stressed that China firmly rejects actions that interfere in other countries’ internal affairs under the guise of human rights, especially those that disregard national sovereignty and security.

Wang highlighted the importance of fairness and justice in human rights issues, stating, “The right to subsistence and development should be prioritized as fundamental human rights.” He also called for the rejection of double or multiple standards on human rights matters.

“We must insist on exchanges and mutual learning,” Wang continued. “We must firmly reject any attempts to impose one’s own models and preferences on others or to politicize, exploit, and weaponize human rights.”

Expressing China’s commitment to international cooperation, Wang stated that China is willing to work with all nations to build a modern world characterized by peaceful development, mutually beneficial cooperation, and shared prosperity. “China is devoted to the future and well-being of humanity,” he added. “We aim to be builders of a community with a shared future for humankind and will actively engage in international human rights cooperation.”

In a related development, Chen Xu, China’s permanent representative to the UN Office in Geneva, addressed a high-level event aimed at bolstering political commitment to International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Chen called on the international community to actively engage in the IHL Initiative, co-launched by China, emphasizing the importance of upholding humanitarian principles and protecting civilians in conflict zones.

“Promoting effective compliance with IHL is a pressing challenge of our time,” Chen said. He underscored China’s commitment to peace talks, providing assistance to developing countries, and supporting humanitarian organizations to alleviate the suffering of people in conflict areas.

Chen emphasized that the global humanitarian crisis remains dire and that joint efforts are essential to address the challenges. “We must work together to uphold humanitarian principles and ensure the protection of civilians,” he concluded.

The statements by Wang Yi and Chen Xu reflect China’s ongoing efforts to promote fair human rights governance and strengthen international cooperation in addressing global humanitarian challenges.
