The Chinese mainland has announced plans to enhance opportunities for young people from the island of Taiwan to participate in China’s democratic processes. Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasized on Wednesday the commitment to improving policies that support the well-being of Taiwan compatriots.
Responding to growing interest from residents of Taiwan in the Two Sessions—China’s annual gatherings of its national legislature and political advisory body—Zhu highlighted the importance of these events as platforms for whole-process people’s democracy. She noted that the Two Sessions offer a vital window for Taiwan compatriots to understand the socialist system with Chinese characteristics.
“In recent years, we’ve seen more Taiwan compatriots sharing their views on cross-strait relations,” Zhu said. “We aim to create more opportunities, especially for the youth, to observe and participate in our democratic processes.”
She assured that the Chinese mainland values the opinions and suggestions from Taiwan residents and is ready to work together towards national reunification and rejuvenation.
“We welcome the active engagement of Taiwan’s youth in our shared future,” Zhu added.
