China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao has called on the United States to reconsider its tariff policies, emphasizing the importance of healthy economic and trade relations between the two nations. In a letter to the newly appointed U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Wang congratulated him on his new role and expressed concerns over recent U.S. trade actions.
Since establishing diplomatic ties, China and the United States have made significant progress in economic and trade cooperation, Wang noted. “Our cooperation has played a key role in driving economic growth, boosting employment, and enhancing the well-being of people in both countries,” he said.
Wang emphasized that a sound China-U.S. economic and trade relationship aligns with the common interests of both nations and meets the expectations of the international community. He expressed China’s willingness to work with the United States to create a better business environment for enterprises in both countries and deliver tangible benefits to their peoples.
Addressing recent developments, Wang stated China’s firm opposition to the U.S. decision to impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods due to fentanyl-related issues. “This is a necessary move to protect China’s legitimate rights and interests,” he said, referencing China’s corresponding countermeasures.
Wang also highlighted that China has been targeted by multiple investigations under the “America First Trade Policy” memorandum. He urged the United States to conduct these investigations with an objective, rational, and professional attitude, enhancing transparency throughout the process.
“It is natural for China and the United States to have differences in the economic and trade field,” Wang remarked. “We should address our respective concerns through equal dialogue and consultation.”
