The pet economy in China is soaring as more young people embrace pets as part of their families. Across the country, pet cafes are popping up, offering cozy spots where visitors can relax and interact with adorable animals.

According to data from Qichacha, a leading platform for company information inquiry services, there are currently over 3,500 cat cafe-related companies and more than 200 dog cafe-related businesses in China. This surge reflects a growing trend among the new generation of pet owners who see their pets not just as companions, but as family members.

“Previously, people would call their pets ‘friends’ – it was all about companionship,” said a young pet owner from Beijing. “But today, we treat them like family. It’s not just a name change, but a whole new level of love and care.”

This shift in attitude has unleashed major market potential. Pet owners are spending big on their furry friends, from meticulously choosing high-quality pet food and ordering custom-made treats and toys, to scheduling regular trips to grooming salons and even splurging on creative styling.

The flourishing pet economy is not only boosting businesses like pet cafes and grooming parlors but also creating new job opportunities in pet care and services. As the pet population continues to grow, the trend shows no signs of slowing down.
