CPPCC Spokesperson Celebrates Spring Festival’s Record-breaking Boom

The Spring Festival has always been a time of joy and celebration, but this year it reached new heights. Liu Jieyi, spokesperson for the third session of the 14th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, praised the remarkable surge in consumption during this festive period.

At a press briefing on Monday, ahead of the CPPCC’s annual session set to open on Tuesday, Liu highlighted the vibrant market activity that marked the Spring Festival. He noted that this year marks the first Spring Festival since its inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, amplifying its global significance.

Box office revenues soared to record highs, with an unprecedented number of moviegoers flocking to cinemas. Liu applauded the seamless integration of traditional culture with modern technology, which has attracted a younger audience and revitalized cultural appreciation.

Moreover, inbound arrivals during the Spring Festival skyrocketed, fueled by an upgraded visa-free policy. Liu pointed out a staggering 150 percent year-on-year increase in visitors, showcasing China’s growing appeal as a global destination.

With the successful inscription of the Spring Festival on UNESCO’s list, China now boasts 44 cultural elements or practices recognized as intangible cultural heritage—the most of any country. This achievement, according to Liu, demonstrates the immense charm and influence of China’s outstanding traditional culture.

Last year, CPPCC members traveled to provinces like Shandong, Shanxi, and Henan to conduct thematic investigations. They engaged with front-line cultural and museum workers, learning about significant projects such as tracing the origins of Chinese civilization. Their efforts led to valuable suggestions aimed at preserving and promoting cultural heritage.

To foster a correct understanding of the history of the Chinese nation, the CPPCC published “100 Facts on History and Culture of Community for the Chinese Nation.” This book delves into 100 topics, elaborating on the extensive exchanges and integration among various ethnic groups in China.

“The CPPCC will continue to dedicate itself to promoting the excellent traditional Chinese culture,” Liu stated. “We aim to constantly strengthen the spiritual power of the people and help build a strong cultural foundation for the nation’s strength and rejuvenation.”
