over 40 Lost Cultural Relics Artifacts Return to China from Us

China Welcomes Home Over 40 Lost Cultural Relics from U.S.

In a significant win for cultural preservation, China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration announced on Tuesday the return of 41 precious cultural relics from the United States. These artifacts, which were illegally taken from China, were handed over by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in New York.

Among the returned items are fascinating pieces like a bronze “money tree” with a ceramic base and a pottery figurine of an ancient entertainer. The collection, featuring pottery, jade, bronze ware, and Buddhist artifacts, spans a vast timeline—from the Neolithic period to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Each artifact carries stories from China’s rich history, offering a tangible link to the past.

The journey of these relics back home is part of a collaborative effort between China and the U.S. to combat the illegal trafficking of cultural heritage. Back in 2009, both countries signed an agreement to prevent the illicit import of Chinese cultural relics into the United States. Renewed in 2014, 2019, and 2024, this agreement has been instrumental in the return of 594 lost artifacts to China over 20 batches.

For many, these artifacts are more than just historical items—they are symbols of identity and heritage. Their return not only thwarts illegal activities but also rekindles a connection between the modern world and ancient traditions.

This latest recovery underscores the importance of international cooperation in preserving human history. It’s a reminder that cultural treasures, no matter where they are found, belong to all of us, and their protection is a shared responsibility.
