Art Ensemble Showcases Elegant Images of Heroine Mu Guiying

Beijing Exhibition Celebrates Mu Guiying Through Shadow Puppetry Art

An array of elegant artworks featuring the legendary heroine Mu Guiying is captivating visitors at the “Dian Xi Yi Ben – Shadow Puppetry and Contemporary Art Exhibition” at the Nanchizi Museum in Beijing. The exhibition, which opened on March 2, 2025, brings together traditional shadow puppetry and contemporary art to showcase the timeless appeal of one of China’s most revered figures.

The centerpiece of the exhibition includes two standout pieces: “At the Window” by artist Dang Feihua and “Flowing Light” by young artist Wang Ning. “At the Window” presents a graceful image of Mu Guiying after she has removed her armor, sitting elegantly on a green bench and adjusting her hair by the window. This shadow puppetry installation beautifully connects the character to the real-world scenery outside the window.

On the other side, “Flowing Light” adorns a decorative window, complementing Dang’s work by depicting a softer side of Mu Guiying through artistic composition. Together, these pieces highlight the multidimensional nature of the heroine, blending strength and grace.

Mu Guiying is a prominent figure from the Chinese folk tale “Generals of the Yang Family Legends.” Known for her bravery and intelligence, she has inspired generations and stands as a symbol of steadfast womanhood in Chinese culture.

The exhibition also features two other artworks centered on Mu Guiying, each interpreting her heroic image through different artistic styles and techniques. Visitors can explore the rich tradition of shadow puppetry while appreciating contemporary interpretations of this legendary figure.

The “Dian Xi Yi Ben – Shadow Puppetry and Contemporary Art Exhibition” offers a unique fusion of historical art forms and modern creativity, celebrating the enduring legacy of Mu Guiying and highlighting the importance of windows as aesthetic elements in traditional Chinese architecture.
