China has reaffirmed its commitment to the “One Country, Two Systems” policy for Hong Kong and Macao, promising to uphold autonomy and promote prosperity in both regions. The announcement was made during a government work report delivered by Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the National People’s Congress in Beijing.
The report emphasized that China will fully, faithfully, and resolutely implement the “One Country, Two Systems” framework. This ensures that Hong Kong and Macao are administered by patriots and maintain a high degree of autonomy. The goal is to support the two Special Administrative Regions (SARs) in growing their economies, improving living standards, and enhancing international cooperation.
“We will uphold constitutional order in Hong Kong and Macao as stipulated in the Constitution and their basic laws,” Premier Li stated. “We will support them in better integrating into national development and maintaining long-term prosperity and stability.”
Addressing cross-strait relations with Taiwan, the report reiterated China’s commitment to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus. China expressed firm opposition to any separatist activities aimed at “Taiwan independence” and external interference, emphasizing the promotion of peaceful development and integration across the Taiwan Strait.
“We will improve institutions and policies for promoting economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait,” the report noted, aiming to enhance the well-being of people on both sides.
