China to Launch Major Climate Projects and Lead Global Governance by 2025

China has announced plans to develop a series of major projects aimed at tackling climate change and intends to take a leading role in global environmental and climate governance by 2025. This announcement came from a government work report submitted to the national legislature for deliberation on Wednesday.

The work report was delivered by Chinese Premier Li Qiang on behalf of the State Council at the opening meeting of the third session of the 14th National People’s Congress in Beijing. The plans signify China’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and contributing to global efforts against climate change.

By actively engaging in international environmental initiatives, China aims to steer global governance on climate issues, reflecting its position as one of the world’s largest economies and a significant stakeholder in climate policies. The proposed projects are expected to focus on reducing carbon emissions, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing ecological conservation.

This move aligns with China’s previous commitments to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060 and to peak carbon emissions before 2030. The country’s efforts are seen as crucial in the global fight against climate change, given its substantial share of global emissions.

For young people around the world, especially in the Global South, China’s initiatives could mean increased collaboration on green technologies, shared environmental strategies, and a collective push toward a more sustainable future.
