China Backs Nuclear Cooperation for Global South, Calls for Stronger Iran Talks
China has voiced strong support for nuclear cooperation benefiting the Global South and is urging for increased diplomatic efforts on major nuclear issues, including Iran’s nuclear program.
Speaking at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors meeting, Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the IAEA, emphasized China’s commitment to leveraging its strengths in nuclear energy and technology. “We aim to promote nuclear energy to benefit the Global South,” Li said, highlighting the importance of nuclear energy in ensuring energy security, addressing climate change, and achieving carbon neutrality goals.
China is focusing on developing its nuclear technology application industry, targeting an annual economic output of 400 billion yuan (approximately $55.79 billion) by 2026. This move reflects China’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions and its role in combating global climate challenges.
On the issue of Japan’s discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Li stressed the need for strengthened international monitoring. “China will continue to carry out independent sampling and testing activities,” he stated, urging Japan to fulfill its commitments and ensure that affected countries can conduct independent monitoring under strict international supervision.
Turning to the Iran nuclear issue, Li noted that it stands at a critical juncture. He called for increased diplomatic efforts and encouraged all parties to promote dialogue and negotiations. Marking the 10th anniversary of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Li remarked, “The only proper way to address the Iran nuclear issue is through political and diplomatic measures.”
Iran has consistently emphasized the peaceful nature of its nuclear program and expressed willingness to engage with the IAEA. Li acknowledged this stance and expressed China’s support for Iran’s efforts to enhance cooperation with the IAEA and resolve outstanding issues.
Li also called on the United States to take substantive steps to re-engage in international diplomatic efforts and initiate dialogue with Iran. He urged the E3 group—France, the United Kingdom, and Germany—and the European Union to maintain dialogue with Iran, focusing on promoting peace and avoiding actions that could escalate tensions.
China’s position underscores its commitment to international cooperation and its role in addressing global nuclear challenges through diplomacy and collaboration.
