Chinese FM Wang Yi Emphasizes One-China Principle in Relations with Japan

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has reaffirmed that the one-China principle is the political foundation of China-Japan relations. Speaking at a press conference on Friday during the third session of the 14th National People’s Congress, Wang stressed the significance of this principle in maintaining stable and friendly ties between the two nations.

Wang cautioned that provoking issues concerning the Taiwan region would invite trouble for Japan. He emphasized that respecting the one-China principle is crucial for harmonious neighborly relations. “To provoke trouble in the name of the Taiwan region is to invite trouble for Japan,” he stated.

The foreign minister underscored the importance of historical awareness, noting that remembering history helps shape the future, while forgetting it can lead to losing one’s direction. He highlighted that guarding against the revival of militarism is a duty Japan must carry out without hesitation—a resolve shared by China and the people of Asia that cannot be challenged.

“What is the right way to be neighbors, and which side of history is correct?” Wang asked. Facing historical transformations, he urged Japan’s thinkers and leaders to carefully consider these questions and heed wise counsel.
