During a press conference on the sidelines of the third session of the 14th National People’s Congress in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphatically stated that Taiwan has never been and will never be a country. He highlighted that the only reference to the Taiwan region in the United Nations is “Taiwan, Province of China.”
“History and reality affirm that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China,” Wang Yi said. He added that supporting “Taiwan independence” interferes with China’s internal affairs and undermines the stability of the Taiwan Strait.
Wang Yi emphasized that the principle of sovereignty is the cornerstone of the UN Charter, and no country or person should apply double standards. “Upholding the one-China principle means opposing any form of ‘Taiwan independence’,” he stressed, noting that achieving China’s complete reunification is a shared aspiration of the Chinese people.
